Ford County Assists with Hazmat Fire at Chemical Plant; People Evacuated

Ford County Fire and EMS deployed their Regional Hazardous Materials Team to Leoti, Kan. Tuesday afternoon, April 19, for a chemical warehouse on fire that necessitated evacuation.
The fire, caused by “a hazmat incident,” according to the City of Leoti, began around 3:30 p.m. at a Nutrien Ag Solutions plant.
A company spokeswoman said no injuries were immediately reported.
Wichita County and the City of Leoti officials issued a request people avoid the area.
City officials asked people to, “stay clear north of the railroad tracks.”
The City of Leoti added, anyone told to evacuate could use the community building as a temporary shelter.
Evacuation orders were eventually lifted at around 9:30 p.m.
Scott County Emergency Management also assisted.
Per an update from Ford County Fire and EMS… crews were able to extinguish the fire and contain all materials within the structure. The final members of the team returned home Wednesday, at around 5 a.m.
