[FINNEY COUNTY, Kan.]

A hit and run accident left the southeast part of Garden City without power for approximately two hours on April 24.

Rafael Cruz, 71, Garden City, Kan. was cited for Duty to Report Accidents by the Garden City Police Department (GCPD).

At around 12:20 p.m., GCPD was dispatched to the 1500 block of E. Fulton Street for a hit and run accident.

Upon arrival to the scene, GCPD observed an electric pole sheared off and suspended in the air by electric cables.

The investigation revealed Cruz was traveling eastbound on Fulton Street. Cruz allegedly dropped his phone on the floor, and as he picked it up, he veered off the road, struck the pole, and left the scene.

Thanks to witnesses and the Kansas Highway Patrol, officers were able to identify Cruz and locate him.

Cruz was not injured from the incident.

Due to the damage, electricity on the southeast part of Garden City was out for approximately two hours. Traffic was diverted from the area while repairs were made.

The estimated damage of the electric pole is around $15,000.00.
