The Garden City Unified School District (USD) 457 Board of Education (BOE) announced Tuesday evening, March 19, Dr. Mike Dominguez will be the next Superintendent of Garden City Public Schools.

Dr. Dominguez will begin his tenure on June 1, following Dr. Steve Karlin’s retirement at the end of the 2021-22 school year.

According to USD 457, Dr. Dominguez has broad education experience, as the superintendent of schools, Stratford ISD, Stratford, Texas. He is currently in his fifth year in that position.

Previously Dr. Dominguez served as Assistant Superintendent of Premier Charter High Schools in Lewisville, Texas for two years and principal at Vernon High School for two years and assistant principal role for 10 years. He has 32 years of experience in education.

USD 457 BOE President, Jennifer Standley, said Dr. Dominguez emerged from a very thorough search process as the right candidate to lead Garden City Public Schools.

“The Board is certain in our choice of Dr. Dominguez and confident that under his leadership USD 457 will continue to be recognized as an educational leader in Western Kansas in preparing our students to be career or college ready,” said Standley.

Standley, explained community input, including the involvement of stakeholders was a key factor in the success of the superintendent search process. The committees included teachers and administrators, parents, and community members.

“The input from the community as a whole was very helpful to our process of selecting the next superintendent,” added Standley. “As a board we feel we made the right selection to serve our students and our community.”

The USD 457 BOE selected three finalists, who were interviewed by the Board.
