One person was killed, and two others seriously injured in a crash between two passenger vehicles and a semi-trailer east of Dodge City, in Ford County, Kan. on Saturday, June 4.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), at around 5:20 a.m. Mike Hernandez, 24, Dodge City was driving a Chevy Camaro on Highway 400 on the east side of Dodge City.
The KHP crash log stated Hernandez was heading west, crossed the center line of the highway and collided with a Dodge Grand Caravan, driven by Elias Castro, 22, Dodge City.
Then a 2016 Volvo semi-tractor, driven by Lester Monroe Long, 41, Kansas City, Mo. hit the Camaro and Caravan.
The Camaro remained on the highway, but the Caravan overturned and landed in the west-bound ditch. The semi-tractor also went off the road and into the west-bound ditch.
Additionally, the KHP at 5:23 a.m. reported another crash in the same area when a second semi traveled through the debris field on the highway.
Subsequently, the second semi, driven by Carlos H Cruz-Rodriquez, 57, Garden City, Kan. had its front passenger side collide with the Camaro.
The KHP confirmed Hernandez was taken to a hospital but later died.
A female passenger in the Camaro, Jasmine Mariah Mata, 24, was seriously hurt in the crash, as was Castro, the Caravan’s driver. Both were taken to the hospital.
Long and a passenger of his semi are expected to be okay.
Cruz incurred no apparent injury.
The Ford County Sheriff’s Office and the KHP closed the road for several hours Saturday morning.
