Pair of Dominant Pitching Performances Lead Conqs to Doubleheader Sweep of Garden City

Dodge City baseball team utilized a pair of dominant pitching performances to take two at home against Garden City on Saturday picking up 1-0 and 4-1 wins.


The wins gave the Conquistadors a 3-1 series win marking the first series win for the Conqs over the Broncbusters of Garden City since 2018. Wins also move the Conqs to 28-21 on the season and 15-13 in KJCCC action.


The Conqs will battle with Hutchinson to close out the regular season next week hosting the Blue Dragons on Thursday, May 5th, and then traveling to Hutchinson on Saturday, May 7th.


Game 1 – vs Garden City won 1-0

Dialed in the from the start of the contest Conqs pitcher, Blake Anderson shut down Garden City constantly throughout the contest. In the bottom of the second Caden Matlon led the inning off for the Conqs and would score two batters later a sacrifice fly by Zandt Payne to give the Conqs the lead. Garden City would manage only two base runners against Anderson and the Conqs throughout the seven innings of action and Conqs made the 1-0 hold up as Anderson had five one-two-three innings.


Anderson earned his fifth win of the season tossing the complete game shutout giving up just one hit and a hit batter while striking out five.


At the plate, Trevor Blackwell was 2-2, while Payne went 1-2 with a double and RBI. Matlon added a 1-3 showing with a double and run scored.


Game 2 – vs Garden City won 4-1

Both teams opened game two with early opportunities to score with base runners but pitching and defense would shut those situations down as it remained scoreless until the top of the third. In the third Garden City broke through and tallied the first run of the game to go up 1-0 and it remained that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Conqs sent seven to the plate. A leadoff walk followed by a hit batter and after a sacrifice bunt, Trent Trammell notched a two-RBI triple to get the Conqs on the board and take the lead. Blackwell added an RBI single in the inning to score Trammell and the Conqs led 3-1 going into the sixth. Garden City managed just two base runners the rest of the game while the Conqs added an insurance run on an RBI single by Blackwell in the seventh as the Conqs shut the door with Tristan Wolf with a one-two-three ninth inning to secure the 4-1 win.


Wolf pitched a gem going all nine innings giving up just one run on seven hits, a walk, and hit batter while striking out 11.


Trammell helped lead the Conqs offense going 2-4 with a triple, two RBI, and a run scored. Blackwell went 3-4 with two RBI, while James Dunlap was 2-4 with a run scored. Payne added a 1-2 showing with a double, walk, and run scored.
