Volleyball Splits Pair of Games to Open Season

It was a doubleheader split for the volleyball team to open the 2022 season as they competed in McCook, Nebraska facing off against Laramie County and McCook.


The Conquistadors would open the season against Laramie County and struggle out of the gate falling behind early in the match ultimately dropping the season opener 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 25-16). Playing back-to-back matches the Conqs had a quick turnaround for their second contest but they responded from the loss by sweeping McCook in three sets 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-22).


Against Laramie County, the Conqs fell behind early in the first set and were constantly looking up to Laramie County ultimately unable to overcome the deficit falling 25-19 in the set. Set two saw a quick burst out of the gate for the Conqs to go up 6-2 but that lead disappeared and despite keeping it close the Conqs fell behind in the match 2-0 as Laramie County took the second set 25-21. Conqs kept their hopes alive in the match in the third set winning a tight battle 25-22 to force the fourth set but Laramie County snagged it 25-16 to take the match.


Leading the way for the Conqs in the loss was Ozge Tan who had a career-high 20 kills and added five digs in the contest. While Martyna Kmuk notched 11 kills and Kaitlyn Creek chipped in nine. Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu finished the contest with 45 assists, five aces, eight digs, and three block assists. Both Alannah Lozoya and Jatnna Pena each recorded 10 digs in the loss.


With the quick turnaround playing in back-to-back contests the Conqs responded from the season-opening loss to take down McCook in straight sets. Set one was a tight back-and-forth contest until the Conqs made a late push to come back and take the set 26-24. The second set saw the Conqs establish control early on working to a 12-7 lead and ultimately went on to take it 25-18, while in the third set it was another tight battle to the end, but the Conqs secured the win with a 25-22 to take the match.


Once again Tan led the Conqs offensively as she registered 19 kills and made it a double-double in the match with 14 digs. Kmuk chipped in 15 kills on a .433 hitting percentage, while Creek tallied nine kills. Turkmenoglu continued to setup the offense tallying 42 assists and recording three aces, while Lozoya tallied 10 digs.


The split puts the Conqs at 1-1 to open the season with Jayhawk Conference action up next for the team as they host Hutchinson on Wednesday, August 24th at 6:30 pm.
